Indian Railways completed over 200 pending maintenance works during the COVID-19 lockdown. This includes repair work, yard remodelling, dismantling and rebuilding of old bridges, construction and strengthening of the new foot over bridges, doubling and electrification of rail lines and renewal of scissor crossovers.

Some of the projects were pending for several years. The national transporter was unable to complete them due to the high traffic of trains.

However, these were planned amid the lockdown so they could be completed without hindering train traffic.

Key projects completed by railways include: 

• Yard modification work in Jolarpettai (Chennai Division) which helped in improving the speed up to 60 kmph on Bengaluru end. 
• Dismantling of an old abandoned foot over bridge at Ludhiana 
• Re-girdering of a bridge on Tunga river (Mysuru division)
• Dismantling of an unsafe deck of Kopar Road near Dombivali in Mumbai. 
• Two projects of doubling with electrification were concluded in Varanasi.
• Construction of two new bridges near Vijayawada.
• Renovations of a wooden layout scissors crossover with standard prestress concrete (PSC) layout in Vijayawada & Kazipet yards (Vijayawada division) were also completed during the lockdown.
